an astoundingly clear voice beyond belief. she could wake up the angels everytime she sang and they would join in im sure in heaven. the holy city is one of her master pieces sung only as she can. when i saw her aging and getting up there in her nineties it sadened my heart to know that magnificent voice was no longer though good it still was , it hurt my heart remembering that grand gift god gave her to sing like no other.. i could listen to vera sing for hours on end. during the war i would as a kid hear her sing and i would stop whatever i was doing to listen then to sing along with her for i sang in a church as soloist for most of my life and after watching vera sing so calmly with such enghusiasm in her voice and her phrazing i learned to do the same . vera i love you and always shall your f ace and gorgeous voice will remain in my mind till the very day i die. god love you.
No comparison. Those who sang with her were petrified and did not duet with her anymore. At 100 years old, she is a monument and England is so proud of her.
When my mom died 25 years ago she had wanted this sung at her funeral but we always thought the title was Jerusalem, confusing it with the William Blake hymn. Anyway the priest didn’t know it and we didn’t know it was called The Holy City. All I knew was that it was featured in the 30’s film San Francisco. In the days before the internet you couldn’t figure these things out very easily. I’m sooo grateful to hear it now. It really chokes me up. Thanks for posting.
My dad told me an odd thing, when him and his comrades were in the desert and then Italy they preferred to listen to Gracie Fields. Listening to Vera made them feel more homesick than they already were. I think that is a tribute to one of the best female singers ever. Luv her

Those who dislike the song and the singer are either anti-semitic or do not know how to appreciate godly music. What a shame!
