Saw Donovan about a week ago live in Glasgow. Before he played this song he talked about how he wrote it about a girl from his folk club. He said he remembered her jet black hair and how pretty she looked but she was with another man who was a bit of a rambler. It makes this song a little more meaningful every time I hear it.

A child of the night is going to be born. I watched this play out and those laughing girls were whirled away to whatever fate claimed them.
